Support And Services ▶ Learning And Design Centres

Overview & Location

The Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology has a firm commitment to provide a rich and supportive learning environment for all their students. The Learning and Design Centres (LDCs) is an initiative taken by the Faculty to better realise this commitment.

There are two LDCs (mostly used by Engineering students), and the FEIT Student Resource Hub (servicing Building 10 staff and students).

LDC 1

LDC 2

FEIT Student Resource Hub (SRH)

Statement of Aims

Our aims are to:

  • Make resources of the Faculty readily accessible to all students and staff,
  • Provide easier and more timely access to knowledge and skills for assignments, preparation for workplace engineering experience, projects, thesis work and independent initiatives,
  • Provide a venue and a means of fostering greater interaction between students at all stages and staff.

The LDCs support courses offered by the Faculty which are:

  • Learner-centred - values students' individual experiences, needs and aspirations,
  • Practice-based - fosters learning through authentic workplace experiences and academic study,
  • Focused on sustainability as a central theme - educating engineers who will go on to work towards social and environmental sustainability.

Opening Hours

(Hours may be extended if there is sufficient demand - email FEIT_LDCAdmin@uts.edu.au with details)

  • LDCs: Mondays to Thursdays: 11am-7pm, Fridays: 11am-5pm
  • SRH: Hours will vary, so check the signs near the door.

The LDCs and SRH are not open on Public Holidays or during the holidays between semesters.

Please note that the duty tutors are available in the LDCs from Week 2, but may not be available during VCs week and Tutorial Week unless specific arrangements have been made.

Also, check for changes to opening hours during Tutorial, VCs and Exam weeks. There may be only one or two areas open on certain days!

Resources & Services

The following resources and services are available within the LDCs:

PCs and Printers

PCs in the LDCs have installed on them faculty-specific software that you are using in your subjects, some training packages, mathematical and simulation packages, CAD and drawing software, and component data. There are also CDs and DVDs in the resource collection which you can use in the LDC.
There is a card-operated Laser printer in each of the LDCs.

Both the printers and photocopiers operate using your Student ID once you have added credit to your account. Cost per single copy is 11 cents. There is a card-operated photocopier in each of the LDCs, and a station to recharge them in the level 3 resource centre and in Building 2 on level 4 near the ITD Helpdesk.

Lab Equipment

LDC1 offers a large range of laboratory equipment for student use, including: power supplies, oscilloscopes, minilabs, soldering irons, standard lead kits and tool kits. No booking is necessary for these items. The LDC does have some other more specialised equipment (see resource database) for which you may have to make a booking. Look at the LDC resource database for more details and specifications. There is also a video camera and data projector for you to practice and review your presentations - bookings can be made at the Reception desk in LDC1.

Modules and Kits

Some subjects include the use of modules or kits as part of the course work, or they may be offered as an activity or task in your subject. These may be available from the LDC. Your lecturer or subject notes will let you know if you need to pick up a kit or module from the LDC. You should check if the kit or module is available in LDC1 or LDC2, or both. Some subjects that use kits or modules include IDS, IEE and IMME.

You should also check if wire is required and/or supplied in your kit. You should ensure that you buy wire if it is not supplied. READ YOUR NOTES. LDC1 has some wire which is available only for fixes, not the initial construction of your kit. DO NOT EXPECT TO USE LDC WIRE TO BUILD YOUR KIT!

Subject Materials

Course Study Guides, subject handouts, assignment cover sheets and other general subject information for many subjects are available for your reference. You may have to photocopy them, or there may be extra copies for collection. Ask your lecturers what materials for their subject are in the LDC for you to look at or collect. To access the subject folders just ask the reception staff.

Group Study Rooms

There is a Group Study Room available in each LDC. They are suitable for quiet group study or project work for up to about eight students. There is a whiteboard and computer if you want to practice class presentations, and the Group Study Room in LDC1 also has a data projector and video camera so you can record and review yourself. The Group Study Rooms may be booked for up to one hour per day if there is at least three of you wanting to use it together. Bookings can be made up to a week in advance at the reception desk. You need to turn up within ten minutes of your booked hour; failure to do so will mean a cancellation of your booking. You are free to use the Group Study Room whenever it is not booked, but check first with the reception staff.

Theses for Viewing

If you wish to view previous D and HD Capstone Projects, lodge the Capstone Project Loan Form in LDC2 . If the requested project is available it will be delivered to LDC2 for your perusal (see the Capstone Thesis Library to determine availability).

No booking is necessary to see the Engineering Liaison Librarians in the LDCs. You can also contact them via email.

You can view the main library catalogue on: www.lib.uts.edu.au
